This past Tuesday, May 2, Mona and the BF Team made our way to the North Carolina General Assembly in Raleigh to voice our support for the Second Chance Legislative Agenda to our state representatives.

Second Chance Lobby Day was game changing. As Mona shared, “I saw so many people like me in powerful positions who were formerly incarcerated. They weren’t afraid to walk around people who act like they’re superior to us. And to see formerly incarcerated people use their energy to help other people — they’re not forgetting where they came from. It made my vision so much clearer on what I want to do. I don’t have to keep living my life with these barriers.”

Second Chance Lobby Day also happened to fall on the same day as Mona’s Freedom Anniversary – May 2 – the day she was released from prison a year prior after serving a 4.5 year sentence. And better yet, it was her last full day on probation.

Mona is finally a truly free woman.

Furthermore, this Mother’s Day will be Mona’s first with her son since she was incarcerated.

Check out the below video to hear directly from Mona what this moment means to her.

Happy Mother’s Day to all the mommas affected by incarceration. As Mona said, no matter your circumstances, nobody can take away the fact that you are somebody’s mother. We see you.
