November 2023: Our Wins

We believe there is no such thing as a “small win.” Here are the latest Benevolence Farm accomplishments to celebrate.

  • HW received her certificate of completion for a Mental Health Peer Support class.
  • RB passed her learner permit test with flying colors. She’s one step closer to getting her driver’s license.
  • A few months ago, we accepted a woman into our program with an expected May release date. However, due to legal complications, she was shuffled between jail and prison for months. Finally, we got the word that she could come home. As of Nov 1, DB finally arrived at Benevolence Farm a free woman!
  • Speaking of new residents, we also welcomed home LA to our 307 House in Burlington. We officially have 10 residents and two full houses.
  • One of our residents is navigating a complicated experience of childcare. SB arrived home on the first day of her son’s kindergarten experience. Over the next month, he was suspended for 20 of the 30 school days due to behavioral problems. As she navigated this experience and advocated for disability support for her son, residents started to come together to find ways to support SB, her adult daughter, and SB’s son. While there are many challenges to come, staff and residents are there to support SB as she fights through the systems working against her. And that is a major win to us!

A Special Shoutout to Daisy ❤️

We are super proud of Daisy who hosted our first ever candle workshop for Halloween. Check out the below video of her teaching friends how to make a Skeleton Bath candle, as well as a Pumpkin Pie “whipped” topping.

Daisy completed probation this past week and moved back home to Lenoir, North Carolina over the weekend. We are super proud of all her hard work regaining her license, supporting her siblings, and obtaining a car and place to live.

One of the hardest parts for staff is to say goodbye to residents. But, thanks to the community we intentionally build here, we know we will be in touch with Daisy and watch her continue to grow over the years.

Congrats, Daisy! Best of luck on the next leg of your journey. 🎉
