We believe there is no such thing as a “small win.” Everyone deserves a little celebration. Here are the latest Benevolence Farm accomplishments.HW got behind the wheel for the first time in her life! She is practicing for her driving test later this month and hopes to get her license.
• CD secured a job at a temp agency while she navigates family court in hopes of reuniting with her daughter sometime next year.
• One of our Burlington house residents came to Benevolence Farm as part of a negotiated pre-release deal after spending three years in a local jail, which is more time than some folks spend in prison. This week, in collaboration with her attorney, she appeared before the judge to finalize her pending charges. Thanks to her successes since her release and her attorney’s advocacy, she received a year of supervised probation, a lower level felony than originally charged, and will not have to report to jail or prison. This is a huge win and a first for Benevolence Farm — we don’t usually get to be a part of a campaign to keep someone out of prison! She now has an interview with a local trucking company and her chances are that much better because she no longer has pending charges. She is one step closer to her dream of owning her own big rig company someday.
• Congratulations to BF alumna Gabby (pictured below), who recently became a Level 4 Hair Stylist with specialties in curly hair and color at Poppy Salon in Durham, NC. If you are in need of a new stylist, Gabby is your person — she’s taking new clients. We also want to recognize Gabby as an alumna who gives back. She’s made time in her busy schedule these past few years to return to the Farm and provide free haircuts to current residents when they come home from prison. We thrive in community and Gabby is one of our community members who exemplifies this every day. Thank you and congrats, Gabby!
